Houses on Wheels
It is my hope that my book pays tribute to both the
Underground Railroad and to the history of house moving
and shares the spirit of a people deserving to be honored.
Hibbing, Minnesota pays tribute to the entrepreneurial
spirit of the American people in the early 1900s and to
house movers. And it’s not the only place to have many
houses moved. Yet I cannot tell more or it will spoil the
end of the story. All I can do is share photographs of
other historic house moves and then let you be surprised
by them and by the story.

Your House Moving Story This is a chance to share a
house Please write your story and send it in. We may
edit for clarity and then post your true story about a
house move. If you have a photo, send it as well.
Underground Railroad Houses Maybe you know of a
house in your area or maybe you live in a house with a
story to tell about the Underground Railroad. Send in
your information so we can post possible sites for the
Underground Railroad.
Your Imaginary House So many people had imaginary
houses when they were a child, as in the beginning of
the book with the Sarah’s fantasy house, and her
imaginary house figures into the story in important
ways. Maybe you or a child you know has an imaginary
house? Write it down to share and we may post it to
share it with others.

Our House Move It was a day like no other as our
1906 house moved down the road. Here are
family photos that show our house we bought for
one dollar. It is remarkable what renovation, hard
work and paint color can do to an old house!
